“Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.”

Stephen R. Covey

Do you define your priorities? If yes, what are your current priorities? In my own words, a priority is an objective or desire that receives more attention and resources than others because it is more meaningful and vital. One of the reasons why we sometimes feel that we could have achieved more at the day's end is the lack of prioritizing our desires. We fail to clearly define to ourselves what is essential and what is frivolous; which is why we keep spending valuable resources engaging in activities that appear to be beneficial, but do not have any real value. So, this article is dedicated to priorities, and how they help us overcome complacency, which will cause us to have more fulfilling days.

First of all, A Priority is anything you hold as more important than others, and as result, are more inclined to allocate more resources to.

You can have distinct priorities when it comes to the different aspects of your life—your health, your finances, your relationships, your profession, your personal aspirations and desires, and personal development. You can also declare one category of your life as more important than the others.

It is also worth mentioning that even if two things appear to be of equal significance, after careful consideration, one of them will emerge as the most important. For this reason, we must careful deliberate on which of our desires or obligations are actually important.

Why should you settle on what your priorities are?

1. It promotes the vital skill of focusing. Deciding on what your priorities are enables your mind to keep nudging you and prompting you to ignore all forms of distractions and to execute those plans that are of precedence.

2. Having a clear sense of your priorities reduces the risk of burn-out in the future; this is simply because you'll invest more resources and attention in those activities that are actually worth it. Doing this consistently helps you tackle even the most arduous duties without experiencing the pressure that is associated with having to carry out those obligations.

How to define your priorities.

“Desires dictate our priorities, priorities shape our choices, and choices determine our actions.”

Dallin H. Oaks

In some instances, it is quite easy to clearly define what the priority (essential option) is among a number of desires. For example, I'd like to think that for most people, choosing between going to a birthday party, and sitting for a final professional exams is a simple decision that requires no thinking; because, sitting for the exams is the obvious choice because that is clearly the priority in this case.

You can assign a particular goal or desire as a priority based on a number of things and they include...

1. Your overall picture you see for your life: How is this current activity that you want to pursue going to affect the dreams you have? So an activity that will assist you in achieving your dreams can be defined as a priority; However, one that is frivolous and has no potential benefit to dreams shouldn't be of prime concern.

2. The amount of time you have left to complete a goal or desire definitely determines whether or not something is a priority; however, not every urgent obligation should be considered as a priority: that obligation should also be important, productive, and worthy of your resources.

3. The amount of resources that is needed to perform the goal or desire: It is advisable to tackle the more difficult options first . This will help you accomplish all your obligations because you won't be too tired to deal with the easier ones.

Knowing your priorities will help you structure your life more effectively, and help you create balance because you have a clear idea of just how much is needed to accomplish each desire. You also know exactly how important each desire is to your overall aspirations (if it is beneficial or detrimental).

Once again, your priority is anything that you've decided to allow to take precedence over everything else because of how important it is to you and your overall purpose. Once you've figured out what this is, decide to consistently devote your resources to it in the proportion that is required.
